REPORT ON MY EXPERIENCE IN JAÉN, SPAIN (JANUARY 2024 – JULY 2025)

Msc ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT.

Before beginning my Erasmus+ exchange program in Jaén, Spain, I was filled with a mixture of excitement and curiosity. I hoped to grow academically, but also to discover how it feels to live and learn in a new cultural setting. I looked forward to experiencing the Spanish approach to teaching and research, while also immersing myself in Andalusian traditions, language, and lifestyle. Above all, I saw it as a chance to challenge myself, step out of my comfort zone, and build international friendships

The University of Jaén provided a stimulating and supportive academic environment. The teaching approach combined theoretical knowledge with practical engagement, which I found particularly valuable. Lecturers placed great emphasis on class participation, group collaboration, and critical reflection. Assignments were designed to encourage independent thought and application of knowledge, and the balance between academic rigor and student support was noteworthy. I greatly valued the opportunity to learn through field activities and visits, which gave me a deeper appreciation for Spain’s cultural and environmental heritage. Engaging with peers from different countries and disciplines challenged me to consider diverse perspectives, broadened my worldview, and enhanced my intercultural communication skills.

Living in Jaén was a rewarding experience in every sense. The city’s welcoming atmosphere, framed by its vast olive groves and historic landmarks, created a unique backdrop for daily life. Adjusting to Spanish customs such as the later dining hours, the tradition of siesta, and the vibrant evening culture required some adaptation, but soon became an enjoyable rhythm of life.
The warmth of the local people made integration easier, and language exchange opportunities helped me to gradually overcome the challenge of communicating in Spanish. Beyond Jaén, traveling to Granada, Córdoba, and Seville allowed me to appreciate the cultural richness of Andalusia, from its architectural heritage to its deep-rooted traditions. These experiences were as educational as my time in the classroom.

This program has had a profound impact on my personal and academic development. It has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of cultural sensitivity. The experience of navigating a different academic system, living in a new cultural setting, and building connections across borders has instilled in me greater confidence and independence.
Equally important, I gained valuable insight into how sustainability and community engagement are interpreted and practiced in Spain. This knowledge has enriched my academic focus and will continue to influence my future research and professional aspirations.

I would strongly encourage students to take part in Erasmus+ exchange programs. The experience provides more than academic growth; it fosters intercultural understanding, personal maturity, and global awareness.

My Erasmus+ experience in Jaén was truly transformative. It gave me knowledge, friendships, and memories that I will always carry with me. The lessons I learned in Spain extend far beyond the classroom, and I am confident they will continue to shape my future path.
