MPHIL. NATURAL RESOURCES (SOCIAL FORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL
GOVERNANCE)

Before embarking on the Erasmus+ exchange program in Germany, I was eager to broaden my understanding of environmental governance and gain exposure to international academic circles, particularly in relation to the programme I was going to study, Biosphere Reserve Management. I was anticipating the opportunity to establish global networks, experience a new learning environment and gain insight into the European implementation of environmental policies. I was also eager to learn more about different cultural perspectives on sustainability and to refine my research skills.
My time spent in Germany was enlightening and transformative. During the colder months, specifically December and January, the temperatures were notably lower than I had expected. However, I was able to adapt to this and other challenges over time.
I was impressed by the efficiency, reliability and thoughtful planning of Germany’s transportation network. For classes and for traveling to other convenient places, such as Berlin, I usually used trains and buses.
The classes were intellectually stimulating, offering a balance between challenge and accessibility. The instructional strategies placed a strong emphasis on group projects, real-world application and lively debate, which I found to be quite effective. The field trips to biosphere reserves, which provided an opportunity for experiential learning, were especially enjoyable. I had the opportunity to meet people from various parts of the world, which enriched my understanding of different perspectives and cultures. German society stood out as quite different, with a notable emphasis on punctuality, personal hygiene and environmental awareness. Initially, adapting to the food and language posed a slight challenge, but with time, I came to appreciate the unique aspects of the experience.

This exchange program has been an invaluable learning experience, particularly in terms of the importance of international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges. I have gained a deeper understanding of the significance of community involvement in conservation and sustainable resource management. I also had the opportunity to learn how to interact across cultural boundaries and adjust to new situations.
I would like to humbly recommend that students who are interested in taking part in an exchange program consider doing so. It’s a fantastic chance to advance academically, personally and culturally. In my opinion, future participants would benefit from maintaining an open mind, engaging in all events and capitalizing on every opportunity to learn. Additionally, it would be wise to meticulously organize and manage your time and financial resources during your visit.
