REPORT ON MY ERASMUS EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE IN GERMANY (MARCH TO JULY 2026)

LEVEL 300 BSc. FIRE, SAFETY, AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT STUDENT
If someone had told me that I would have the opportunity to study in Europe during my tertiary education, I would have asked, “Me?” Yet here I am, grateful for the opportunity to participate in the ERASMUS Exchange Programme. I spent the summer semester at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development in Germany, where I studied International Forest Ecosystem Management.
Before the exchange, I looked forward to broadening my understanding of forest ecosystems and connecting this knowledge with my background in Fire, Safety, and Disaster Management to contribute to wildfire mitigation, environmental protection, and nature conservation. I was also excited to experience a new culture, build international networks, and study in a different educational and climatic environment.
When I arrived in Germany in March, the weather was much colder than I expected. Although it was initially challenging, I gradually adapted to the climate. Academically, the programme exceeded my expectations. The teaching at HNEE was practical and interactive, with group discussions, field excursions, presentations, technical discussions, and report writing. These activities improved my communication, teamwork, presentation, and analytical skills. I was also impressed by the reliable and efficient public transport system, which made travelling convenient.
Beyond the classroom, I met students from different countries and shared experiences through food, languages, traditional clothing, and social activities. I also made German friends who were welcoming and supportive. Although the language barrier was challenging, it encouraged me to improve my German. I gained a deeper appreciation of German culture, punctuality, sustainability, environmental awareness, and waste management practices.
The exchange programme was a life changing experience that contributed greatly to my academic and personal development. I gained valuable knowledge in forest ecosystem management, climate sustainability, environmental stewardship, and intercultural communication. I also developed a broader understanding of different cultures and approaches to learning.
I encourage students interested in exchange programmes to embrace the opportunity with an open mind and a willingness to learn. They should participate actively in academic and cultural activities, interact with people from different backgrounds, and be prepared to adapt to new environments. I am sincerely grateful for this opportunity and will always cherish the experiences, knowledge, friendships, and lessons gained during my semester at HNEE.
