REPORT ON MY EXPERIENCE AT UNIVERSIDAD DE JAÉN, SPAIN (JANUARY TO JULY 2025)

Going to Spain for the Erasmus+ Student Exchange Programme was an exciting opportunity for me to step outside my familiar academic environment and experience learning in a different setting. Before leaving, I looked forward to expanding my knowledge in biological sciences, meeting people from different backgrounds, experiencing Spanish culture, and gaining new experiences that would contribute to my academic and personal growth.

My experience at the Universidad de Jaén was a life changing adventure that broadened my academic and cultural horizons. During my stay, I enrolled in courses equivalent to 24 credit hours, including Chemical Analysis of Biological and Environmental Samples and Human Clinical and Forensic Genetics. The latter was particularly fascinating because it included a tour of a forensic laboratory at the Universidad de Granada Medical Centre, where I gained practical insight into the application of genetic principles in physical and forensic anthropology, particularly in relation to the Spanish Civil War.

The cultural experience was equally enriching. I interacted with people from diverse backgrounds, made friends from different countries, and learned about their customs and ways of life. Although adapting to a new culture was sometimes challenging, the warmth and hospitality of the Spanish people made the transition easier. Learning Spanish was another challenge because most of my courses were taught in Spanish. However, it became an opportunity for growth, and I was able to learn the basics of the language during my stay.

The exchange programme was an invaluable learning experience that strengthened my academic knowledge and personal development. I became more open minded and adaptable and gained a greater appreciation for cultural diversity and international learning. I also learned the importance of being willing to step outside my comfort zone and make the most of opportunities in a new environment.

I would encourage students interested in exchange programmes to embrace the opportunity with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Preparing ahead by learning the basics of the host country’s language can be helpful, especially where courses are taught in that language. Students should also interact with people from different backgrounds, participate actively in available opportunities, and seek assistance whenever they face academic or cultural challenges.

I sincerely appreciate the University of Energy and Natural Resources and the coordinating team for making this exchange programme possible. The experience has provided me with valuable knowledge and memories that will continue to shape my academic and personal growth. Gracias a todos por esta increíble oportunidad.
