STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM AT SPAIN, UNIVERSIDAD DE JAEN

REPORT OF MY EXCHANGE PROGRAM TO SPAIN AT UNIVERSIDAD DE JAEN, FROM MARCH  – JULY 2023

BY: MS. VICTORIA AMA ASIBI KAKRA IMABONG AYEH (BSC CLIMATE CHANGE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT)

Before the trip, my expectations at Jaén University were to enhance academic and research skills, adapt to a new culture, build academic networks, and experience personal growth. My journey provided transformative insights.

My stay at Jaén University began in early spring (10-20°C) and extended through the summer (30-40°C) showcasing climate patterns and adaptation challenges. The transitions of the weather allowed me to witness the changing landscape and the bloom of colorful flowers across the city and the university campus. Throughout my stay at Jaén University, the transportation system remained reliable and accessible. The efficient bus network connected the university campus to the city center and other neighborhoods, enabling me to explore different parts of Jaén and its surroundings during my free time. I had the pleasure of forming deep and lasting friendships with Spanish and other international students. The extended duration of the exchange allowed for stronger bonds to develop as we shared experiences, academic challenges, and cultural exchanges.

5 months at the University offered a comprehensive and in-depth academic experience. The climate change courses I took during the spring and summer semesters covered a more in-depth view of the topics I learned at UENR, especially Energy and Environment. The longer academic term allowed for more extensive research projects and in-depth discussions, giving me a deeper understanding of climate change issues and their complexities.

I also had the opportunity to participate in Semana Santa processions during Easter, as well as witnessed and partook in diverse cultural traditions and celebrations such as local music festivals and outdoor events that showcased the vibrant Andalusian culture.

For future students, make adequate departure planning, which includes; good academic preparation, good financial preparation and connecting with previous exchange students for mentorship and advice. It is also important to maintain communication with the Host University while preparing to travel. Lastly, understand the stipend conditions and negotiate, if necessary.

In conclusion, my five-month experience at UJA was transformative, marked by diverse weather, efficient transportation, meaningful friendships, engaging academics and immersive cultural encounters. The extended stay enriched my understanding of climate change and global perspectives, enhancing my commitment to addressing climate challenges and promoting sustainability.
